Fair 2008
Episode #3903
Junior Egg Rolling Contest - Given its shape, it's really hard to "roll" an egg. You never know which way it will go. Near Heritage Village, Peter Hamlin says the kids were having an "egg-citing" time trying to roll eggs. State Fair Games - The Beijing Olympics have nothing on the great Iowa State Fair. Amy Johnson Boyle is on the Grand Concourse where teams compete in relays for State Fair Gold. The Dinner Bell - An Historic Fair Food Stand - North of the Swine Barn there's a food stand that's been a popular eating place for decades. Tom and Carol Robbins have been running the Dinner Bell for more than 20 years. Learn its history and why this eatery is a place where everybody is part of the family. Governor's Charity Steer Show - Over 25 years, the Governor's Charity Steer show has donated more than one million dollars to the Ronald McDonald Houses in Iowa. Each year, celebrities and dignitaries, including Iowa's governors, become animal exhibitors for a day. Governor Chet Culver took his turn around the ring at this year's charity event. Horse Show - Miniature Horses - Their small stature is a product of centuries of breeding. Bred as pets for nobility in the 17th century, some miniatures were also used as work horses. Today, the small animals bring their unique charm to the Livestock Pavilion show ring. Highlights include pleasure driving events and the youth costume class. Late Model Races (Deery Brothers Summer Series) - Description coming soon – need to know what cars are involved, etc. Side Roads - State Fair Volunteers - Paul Berge is travelling down another Side Road at the Fair. He finds some of the folks who help keep the Fair going every year, the unsung Fair volunteers. Art Judging (Photography) - The technology for taking photographs has changed considerably with the advent of digital cameras. But the art of taking a good picture hasn't changed. At the Cultural Center we see some winners in the Photography Salon. Veteran's Day Parade - Monday, August 11 was Veterans' Day at the Fair. We always like to attend the Veterans' Parade on the Grand Concourse. It's a privilege to honor those who came home and those who didn't. They all made it possible for us to celebrate our Fair.
Monster Arm Wrestling - At the Media Center in the Cattle Barn, force is pitted against force. The Monster Arm Wrestling tournament is celebrating it's 30th year at the Fair.
