Fair 2009

Episode #4001

Parade Chainsaw Carving - Heritage Village showcases our ancestors skills. And I know they had axes and knives and handsaws ... but I’m just not sure about chainsaws. Photo Judges - Going behind the scenes, we learn what it takes to create an award-winning photo from someone who knows.... a well-known Iowa photographer. The Nadas - They started as a college band in the mid 1990s in Ames and are still going strong. We’re giving it up for The Nadas at the Anderson Erickson Dairy Stage. Food Judging - It’s time for measuring cups and spoons at the Elwell Family Food Center. There were hundreds of entries in the battle for the best dinner rolls. FFA Market Swine - Time for a stop at the livestock ring. In the Swine Barn, the young folks from FFA are working to make their animals look good for the judge. Cowgirl Queen - They’re stomping on the bleachers, hooting and hollering at the Livestock Pavilion. The crowd’s ecnouraging the cowgirl queen contestants as they give the cowgirl salute. Flowers - Preparing the Fairgrounds for visitors is a lot of work. And many may not even notice the foliage all over the grounds. But Flower Power does make a difference. Tall Corn - The Iowa Corn song identifies Iowa as the state where the tall corn grows. So we stopped by Pioneer Hall to check out the tall corn contest. Big Animals - We said earlier we’ve been covering the Fair for 39 years. And it just had to happen. We’ve run out of words for the next contest. I’ll just say, it’s big.
