  • A Dream Fulfilled: The Saga of George Washington Carver

This opera traces the life and career of George Washington Carver from Winterset and Indianola, Iowa, to the halls of Congress to the prestigious Tuskegee Institute. George Washington Carver is an American hero, scientist, artist, and inventor who lived in the later 1800s to the mid 1900s. What makes his career so interesting is the fact that he was an African American making his way during a period in U.S. history where racism was the common practice. This Opera, produced by the Des Moines Metro Opera and Opera Iowa follows the career of George Washington Carver with a special emphasis on his life in Iowa. It was recorded at Iowa Public Television's Studio III in Johnston, IA. This one-act opera for children describes the life and times of George Washington Carver in Iowa and his life-long connections to the people with whom he lived, studied and worked. His time in the Hawkeye state helped him develop his methods of teaching and research that propelled him to national prominence, and the personal and professional connections established while in Iowa would help lead him to the halls of Congress and provoke luminaries to visit him in Tuskegee, Alabama.
