Killer Disease On Campus (#2909)

Every year in the U.S., 3,000 people are struck down by a potentially lethal bacterial infection that attacks mainly children under five years old and teenagers. Now the disease may be on the rise on college campuses. Commonly known as meningococcal meningitis, it strikes quickly and unexpectedly; symptoms can be so vague and unspecific in the early stages that no alarm bells sound until it's too late. From feeling slightly unwell, a victim may have multi-system failure in hours. Few other life-threatening infections can spread so rapidly. NOVA's special looks at the signs that can signal the disease and how doctors throughout the world are attempting to combat what has become, in some countries, a scourge of epidemic proportions. It also questions why more is not being done in the U.S. to vaccinate those at highest risk, such as college students, to prevent needless death and suffering. [56 minutes] Closed Captioning
