Anne of Green Gables
The Continuing Story (Part 1 of 2) (#301)
When Anne returns to Avonlea for the first time since Marilla's death, she learns that her fiancee Gilbert Blythe has accepted a staff position at the prestigious New York hospital where he has been studying. Gilbert persuades Anne to join him, telling her has arranged a meeting for her at a large publishing house. But their hopes for success in the big city are spoiled. In her new position as a junior editor at Winfield Publishing, Anne is thrilled to meet the dashing American writer, Jack Garrison, Jr. (Cameron Daddo). She soon discovers, however, that he has contrived to steal her original manuscript and she is left shattered and disillusioned. Gilbert, too, becomes disenchanted and frustrated with the politics of working in a large city hospital. Finally, Gilbert convinces Anne that they should leave New York and go home to Avonlea where they can get married and put their disappointing experiences behind them. Upon their return to Prince Edward Island, though, Anne and Gilbert find themselves catapulted into the middle of wartime society. They watch, heartbroken, as their friends go off to war and mourn when so many of them go missing. Feeling pressure from the small community, Gilbert knows in his conscience what he must do and, just a week before his marriage to Anne, he announces his plans to enlist as a medical officer. Before he leaves, Gilbert and Anne are married in a small ceremony. Meanwhile, Anne's closest friend, Diana has seen her own husband Fred (Greg Spottiswood) off to war - and the heartwrenching news soon arrives that he is missing and presumed dead. Anne soon receives the same devastating news that Gilbert is missing in action. Realizing that she cannot give up on him, she sets out across the Atlantic to search for her husband, braving the battlefields of World War I to find the love of her life.
