Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables

At the turn of the century on Prince Edward Island, Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla decide to take on an orphan boy as help for their farm. But they get an unexpected jolt when they're mistakenly sent a girl instead: Anne Shirley. Anne's a dreamer with an unusual point of view, far removed from Marilla's pragmatic ways, and it's only on trial that Marilla agrees to keep Anne...if Anne can keep out of trouble, only Anne has a positive genius for it. As Anne falls into a series of scrapes (and off a roof), makes a bosom friend, searches (and finds) several kindred spirits, Matthew and Marilla discover that their lives have become a great deal richer, now that Anne is at Green Gables.

Her students, most of them Pringle girls, make every effort to disrupt Anne's classes. Anne, however, perseveres and finds an ally in one of her students Emmeline Harris. Anne becomes intrinsically involved with the entire Harris clan including Emmeline's invalid grandmother and with her handsome widowed father. Through the course of the school year Anne succeeds in winning over the Kingsport establishments as well as gaining the respect of her students and the friendship of Miss Brooke. When Anne returns to Avonlea for the first time since Marilla's death, she learns that her fiancee Gilbert Blythe has accepted a staff position at the prestigious New York hospital where he has been studying. Gilbert persuades Anne to join him, telling her has arranged a meeting for her at a large publishing house. But their hopes for success in the big city are spoiled. In her new position as a junior editor at Winfield Publishing, Anne is thrilled to meet the dashing American writer, Jack Garrison, Jr. (Cameron Daddo). She soon discovers, however, that he has contrived to steal her original manuscript and she is left shattered and disillusioned. Gilbert, too, becomes disenchanted and frustrated with the politics of working in a large city hospital. Finally, Gilbert convinces Anne that they should leave New York and go home to Avonlea where they can get married and put their disappointing experiences behind them. Upon their return to Prince Edward Island, though, Anne and Gilbert find themselves catapulted into the middle of wartime society. They watch, heartbroken, as their friends go off to war and mourn when so many of them go missing. Feeling pressure from the small community, Gilbert knows in his conscience what he must do and, just a week before his marriage to Anne, he announces his plans to enlist as a medical officer. Before he leaves, Gilbert and Anne are married in a small ceremony. Meanwhile, Anne's closest friend, Diana has seen her own husband Fred (Greg Spottiswood) off to war - and the heartwrenching news soon arrives that he is missing and presumed dead. Anne soon receives the same devastating news that Gilbert is missing in action. Realizing that she cannot give up on him, she sets out across the Atlantic to search for her husband, braving the battlefields of World War I to find the love of her life. [91 minutes]

  • The Continuing Story (Part 2 of 2) (#302)

In a bizarre twist of fate, Anne is reunited with Jack Garrison who is now working in France as a war correspondent. Jack is travelling with a young French woman, Colette, and their baby son, Dominic. When Jack disappears and Colette is killed during an attack on the field hospital, Anne is left to care for Dominic. At the same field hospital, Anne is stunned to find Fred, suffering terribly from his wounds, but alive. She vows to get both Fred and Dominic home safely to Canada. Subsequently, Anne learns of Jack's role in an American intelligence effort to end the war. Her affiliation with him lures her into a dangerous web of intrigue in exchange for his help in finding her husband. She risks her life to get Dominic to safety in an orphanage, then desperately continues her search for Gilbert. Thanks to Jack's efforts, Anne is finally reunited with Gilbert after his release from a POW camp where troops are abandoning their posts in the wake of the Armistice. When Jack is tracked down and Anne loses him, she and Gil launch a successful search for Dominic whom they adopt upon their return home to Prince Edward Island. [95 minutes]
