Program: The Iowa Journal #133
Broadcast Date: Jan. 28, 2008
With 72-thousand miles of streams and rivers and more than 160-thousand acres of lakes, ponds and wetlands, Iowa may seem rich in water resources, but how much of it is protected from pollution and available for Iowans to use for drinking water, recreation and industry?
The Iowa Journal finds five major issues, some old, some new: legal rights to protect our water from outside siphoning; with new factories using lots of water, defining legal rights internally in the state; fixing aging water treatment plants; readying for more floods in the wake of global warming; and cleaning the water of intruders large and small, including some new water-born elements that can affect human health as well as the ecology.
