Teams faced a variety of challenges leading up to and during competitions. Gearing Up details the triumphs and disasters teams encountered as they shared ideas, discussed their designs, and worked out technical challenges while racing against the clock to complete their robot in time. One team barely finishes building their robot to take to the competition while another team faces doubting attitudes that their robot will even work. Teams deal with rigorous eligibility requirements and have to make adjustments at the last minute. Broken parts must be repaired causing one team to miss all their practice matches. Three students from the correctional facility team escape before the competitions even begin causing school authorities to question the safety of taking the team out for the competition.
