Protecting Paradise: The Western Everglades
The half-hour public television documentary PROTECTING PARADISE: THE WESTERN EVERGLADES tells the story about the threats to drain Florida's great swamp, the Everglades, through historic photographs, vintage footage and interviews with leaders of the early conservation movement, and contemporary biologists and environmentalists. With World War II came the need for lumber to build PT boats, the hulls of mine sweepers, and the decks of aircraft carriers. The large, old growth cypress trees in the Western Everglades were harvested to meet the need. Photos courtesy of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and the Florida State Archives.
