Our Summer in Tehran | Ashura | PBS

Duration: 01:50
Program: Our Summer in Tehran

Among Shi'ite Muslims, Ashura is a major festival. It commemorates the death of Hussein, son of Imam 'Ali and grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, on the 10th of Muharram (October 10, 680) in Karbala, Iraq. The event led to the split between the Sunni and Shia sects of Islam, and it is of central importance in Shia Islam. Ashura is a time for communities to share meals (considered a sacred part of the holiday) and to hear the story of the Battle of Karbala retold in local mosques.
