In other news Wednesday, the U.S. imposed sanctions on President Bashar Assad and six other top Syrian officials for human rights abuses. The U.S. move came after Assad acknowledged police have made mistakes handling unrest there. In Pakistan, 100 militants attacked a key security checkpoint, killing at least 17 people.
