Saving money and saving the planet are two of the good reasons architects around the state give for designing sustainable "green" buildings. The Iowa Journal investigates.

Studio guests are Bob Haug, Executive Director of the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, and Curt Klaassen, of the Iowa Energy Center. They discuss the success of the IAMU building, and how Iowans and Iowa institutions can save money on energy costs, and simultaneously help save the planet's ecosystems.

The show also travels to the Iowa State University campus to see how Architect Kevin Nordmeyer, Principal at RDG Planning and Design, is teaching students about sustainable design. Nordmeyer also illustrates the LEED certification process. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) quantifies the amount of energy savings in building design and construction.

In the News Analysis segment, David Pitt, Associated Press reporter, talks with host Paul Yeager about the proposed transportation license fee, the appropriations bill which may include $120 million to build a new prison in Fort Madison, and the implications of Iowa's new smoking ban.
