Program: The Iowa Journal #152
Broadcast Date: Apr. 21, 2008
Paul Yeager and David Pitt of the Associated Press talk about the rising farm prices in comparison to the 1970s level. They also discuss the CIETC closing arguments, final legislative bills and a possible challenge to the new smoking bill signed last week.
The movie “King Corn” was produced by two film makers, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, from the east coast who lived in Greene, Iowa for a year. The film documents their experiences of raising an acre of corn and following it into the system. They find out about the amount of grain in the system, the uses for it and farm subsidies.
Our discussion is with Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and Frederick L. Kirschenmann, Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center. They cover reaction to the movie, what's changed in agriculture since 2004 when the film was shot, and the future of the industry in light of new markets and growers.
