The long bout of searing weather hit the Northeast with full force Friday as the death toll from the extreme conditions neared 30 nationwide. The so-called "heat dome" lingered across the Plains and the Midwest. Also, the nation's ban on gays serving openly in the military will formally end in 60 days.
