Program: The Iowa Journal #155
Broadcast Date: May. 5, 2008
The air inside your home may be the most polluted you breath. A toxic brew of synthetic chemicals found in building materials, furnishings, and cleaning products may be making you sick.
In 1986 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported the levels of toxic pollutants were five times greater inside houses than outside. Today more than 100,000 synthetic chemicals are registered with the EPA. According to the Breast Cancer Fund, the majority of them have never been tested for their effects on human health.
Green living means seeking solutions that promote human physical health and reduce the negative impact of our lifestyle's on the planet. This episode of The Iowa Journal looks at ways to breathe easier in our homes with guests Linda Mason Hunter, a pioneer in America's green movement and author of several books that offer step-by-step solutions for creating healthy homes; and Lynnae Hentzen, executive director of the Center on Sustainable Communities which promotes residential green building in Iowa.
David Pitt of the Associated Press shares his insights on flooding in Iowa and its impact on planting crops. Other topics include Governor Culver's signing of bills increasing the oversight of students loans and regulating the Veteran's Trust Fund.
