An Arctic Journey in a Changing World
Broadcast Date: Dec. 4, 2008
In 1994, Okoboji, Iowa native David Thoreson and five others aboard a sailboat called Cloud Nine attempted to cross the famed Northwest Passage -- a perilous stretch of water connecting the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans above North America. But the explorers were thwarted in their attempt when Cloud Nine became trapped in Arctic ice.
Thoreson returned to the Arctic in 2007, and found himself in a much different polar environment. Though he says his tale is more story-telling than science, Thoreson believes he is "the canary just back from the coal mine, the ground zero of climate change."
