Iowans by Choice - One of the Best States in Which to Live?

Duration: 27:46 (Full Program)
Transcript (RTF)

On any given day, news headlines boast the successful recruitment of large companies that bring hundreds of jobs to the state. The next day, there may be a story of a plant closing and the loss of the major employer in town.

Meanwhile, under the radar, there is a significant number of non-Iowans coming to the state, establishing their own businesses, and quietly boosting local economies. The movement is perhaps the most cost-effective economic development trend currently in motion. To meet some of these new Iowans, The Iowa Journal visits Oxford, Pocahontas, and Elkader.

In the studio to discuss the current and potential efforts to recruit or retain a workforce are: Rachel Judisch, Chair of the Generation Iowa Commission and Paul Lasley, professor and Chair, Iowa State University Departments of Sociology and Anthropology.

Iowa Public Radio's Jeneane Beck talks with host Paul Yeager about the state of Iowa's economy and Governor Culver's proposed budget cut.
