Russlynn Ali testifies before the U.S. Senate hearing on bullying in schools on June 8, 2012, in Des Moines. Ali is Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education. She is responsible for enforcing civil rights laws in our nation's schools, colleges and universities, and for insuring that institutions receiving federal funds do not engage in discriminatory conduct related to race, sex, disability or age. Previously, she served as top assistant to the president of the Children's Defense Fund, and Assistant Director of Policy & Research at the Broad Foundation, and as chief of staff to the president of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Board of Education. She taught at the University of Southern California Law Center and the University of California at Davis.
