In the late 1800s, Eddyville, Iowa, taxidermist William Temple Hornaday used what he learned from his career to save the lives of countless native species, including the buffalo.
This is the story of one of our nation’s first conservationists. Along with his friend, Senator John F. Lacey, William Hornaday recognized that because the settlement of the west came along at the same time as America’s industrial age, humans had become a threat to the wildlife and natural lands of the U.S.
This video was produced in 1994, and shows footage of Hornaday’s Smithsonian exhibits that are more than 100 years old.
