CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS - THREE MEN GO TO WAR | Intro | PBS

Duration: 02:51
Program: Cuban Missile Crisis: Three Men Go to War
Broadcast Date: Oct. 18, 2012

Premiering October 23, 2012 8-9 pm ET (check local listings) In this opening clip, Brigadier General Gerald McIlmoyle remembers flying high-level U2 reconnaissance missions over Cuba when he realizes that "this beautiful place on earth is dangerous to me." "The world almost came to an end in October of 1962," says historian and author James Blight. "It's not fiction, it's not speculation — it almost happened — and, in fact, in terms of probability it should have happened." But the three leaders at the center of the crisis believed that once the war started there would be no stopping it and had the courage to pull the world back from the brink.
