Margaret Heritage - Formative Assessment

Duration: 01:00:18 (Full Program)

Featured presentation from the 5th Annual Iowa High School Summit, December 9, 2008. Margaret Heritage, Assistant Director for Professional Development: National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing at UCLA, addressed the topics of formative assessment.

*Due to technical difficulties with the recorded presentation, this video begins four minutes into the session.

Formative assessment has been described as the systematic process of gathering student evidence and providing feedback about how learning is progressing while instruction is underway. It stand in contrast to summative assessment, which generally takes place after a period of instruction to determine what students have learned. This keynote will provide a framework for the rationale and development of formative assessment practices that will make instruction in Iowa secondary settings more focused and effective.
