Duration: 01:13:37 (Full Program)

Featured presentation from the 5th Annual Iowa High School Summit, December 8, 2008. Tom Lickona, Ph.D., Professor of Education, State University of New York at Cortland addressed the topics of student character, ethics, fulfillment, and productivity.

Topic: "Preparing to Flourish: The Smart & Good Schools Approach to Helping Students Lead Productive, Ethical, and Fulfilling Lives in the 21st Century"

What are the strengths of character that will help young people succeed in school and lead productive, ethical, and fulfilling lives in the 21st century? The Smart & Good Schools initiative (www.cortland.edu/character) a project of the Institute for Excellence & Ethics and the Center for the 4th and 5th Rs, proposes eight such character assets: 1) lifelong learner and critical thinker, 2) diligent and capable performer, 3) socially and emotionally skilled person, 4) ethical thinker, 5) respectful and responsible moral agent, 6) self-disciplined person who leads a healthy lifestyle, 7) contributing community member and democratic citizen, and 8) spiritual person engaged in crafting a life of noble purpose.

Drawing on examples from award-winning high schools, Tom Lickona will show how "4 KEYS" (self-study, other-study, public presentation, and a community that supports and challenges) can be used to develop these crucial character assets, with special focus on diligent and capable performer. Hew will discuss how to foster academic honesty in a cheating culture; how the Smart * Good model aligns with and enhances 21st century skills; and how the character strengths, 21st century skills, and academics can be simultaneously promoted through Smart & Good approaches being field-tested in Iowa schools in collaboration with the Institute for Character Development (ICD).
