Program: The Iowa Journal #213
Broadcast Date: Jan. 22, 2009
The Iowa Journal looks at government efficiencies at the state and city levels.
The Iowa Journal went to Cedar Rapids to look at the co-location discussion underway since the flood of 2008. How has that community put the county and city together and how will the school play into possible sharing agreements?
Les Beck, Planning Director for Linn County and Brian Fagan, CR City Council and Mayor Pro Tem offer their insights.
The Iowa Journal looks at ways the Iowa government can save money in this economy. Guests on this discussion are: Richard Johnson, the Auditor of Iowa for 24 years before his retirement in 2003; and Michael B. Shear, Founder and CEO of POCKETS Distributed Workplace Alternative. Shear has almost 3 decades experience in bringing new technologies and services to market.
Questions will include: do we need to build another state office building? Are there alternatives to moving office workers to communities outside of the metro to take advantage of lower rent, shorter commutes and filling space in small towns.
Kay Henderson of Radio Iowa and host Paul Yeager talk about the possible sale of the Iowa Lottery to private interests, a local option sales tax for Linn County and Cedar Rapids use for flood recovery and a different flood relief bill moving through committee at the Statehouse.
