Program: Iowa's One-Room Schoolhouses
Broadcast Date: Feb. 28, 2009
Life for Iowa's early rural school teachers was highly moderated. Young women were not allowed to marry in some districts, creating some clever cover-ups. But they were proud of their jobs.
Even though teachers were young, sometimes 15-20 years old, students were required to pass a test to graduate 8th grade - tests not required in urban schools. So, despite rumors to the contrary, many feel the rural school education was better than that of larger communities.
