Program: The Iowa Journal #220
Broadcast Date: Mar. 26, 2009
The Iowa Journal is back again this week looking at ways colleges in Iowa are looking to become more sustainable. What does that mean? They’ve moved past recycling white paper and turning out the lights and now are trying install geo-thermal, using electric cars and designing buildings differently.
We profile a couple of interesting things. Wartburg and Luther spent the month of February in a competition to see which school lowered their power bill the most from last year’s February. It ended in a tie.
At Central in Pella, they are embracing sustainability head and shoulders above other schools. They have sustainability in every new building on campus since 1999.
Our guests include Jerry Kelley, Mayor of Indianola and also Executive Assistant to the President of Simpson College and works with the President's Climate Commitment.
Also a student at Simpson, Kathryn Lisk who is heavily involved in Simpson's efforts at sustainability. The director of the Iowa Energy Center will be on the program as well, Kevin Nordmeyer.
Radio Iowa News Director Kay Henderson and Paul Yeager talk about new tax structure, extension of jobless benefits and the politics of this week's White House health care forum.
