Fair 2009: Draft Horses

Duration: 04:49
Program: Fair 2009 #4002
Broadcast Date: Aug. 18, 2009

Collection: Iowa State Fair

Harnessing the power of one, two, four or more horses, each weighing around a ton, takes both experience and finesse. We visit Shining Stars Percherons in Altoona, just northeast of Des Moines, for a look at what it takes to prepare for the Iowa State Fair draft horse show. Mitch and Dianna Marquardt, the owners of Shining Stars Percherons were inspired to buy their first Percheron after seeing the horses at the Iowa State Fair in 2000. Today the Marquardts have 16 Percherons and have won top honors in state fair competition against some of the top hitches in the nation.
