Program: The Iowa Journal #301
Broadcast Date: Sep. 10, 2009
There are many things at stake when we don't educate all of our children and they don't leave our K12 system without a high school diploma. The statistics are staggering about those who end up in prison, those who end up on social welfare.
One of the avenues we're taking as a state right now is to create a voluntary pre-school for all four year olds because the research is very clear on that. Also that if they, all children, have a quality beginning and enter school ready to learn we have a much greater chance that they will succeed, graduate from high school, not become pregnant, not end up in the prison system and not end up on a welfare roll.
So, the statistics, the research is very strong in that arena. That pre-school opportunity really does make a difference.
