Some things at the Fair become family traditions as generation after generation participates. We found one such family of cooks. This Centerville, Iowa family has over 10,000 State Fair ribbons to its credit.
Robin Tarbell-Thomas' recipe for Lime Meltaways
1 c. butter
1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 T. grated lime peel
1/2 t. white vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour
1/4 c. cornstarch
Beat butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add ime peel and vanilla; mix well. Stir in flour and cornstarch until well blended. Place dough in cookie press with ribbon top. Cut dough in 3-inch length. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 7-8 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheet. Cool completely.
Prepare lime glaze and brush on cookies:
Lime Glaze
1/2 c. powdered sugar
4 t. lime juice
2 t. grated lime peel
Mix all ingredients until well blended.
