Fair 2007: Sheep Dog Trials

Duration: 05:00

The state fair Stock Dog Trials test the dog and its trainer’s ability to control and drive a small herd of sheep or cattle. Designed to demonstrate the dog’s training and instinct along with the handler’s shepherding skills, Stock Dog Trials first originated in Europe more than 100 years ago. Stock dogs have been bred to have a quality called "eye" which is their ability to "read" the livestock and anticipate how to control and move the herd. Handlers communicate to their dogs using whistle or voice commands. Coverage includes highlights from the event and commentary by Stock Dog Trials Superintendent Don Hummel.
