Most of the kids see it as a chance to do one of their favorite things… make silly noises before an adoring and appreciative crowd. But while kids and many grown-ups see it as simple fun Fair frolic, we might do well to remember that the Hog Calling Contest at Pioneer Hall is inspired by a very real need on many an Iowa farm. If you raise hogs, it’s a necessary skill and part of being good at your job. And in this case, worthy of a blue ribbon.
