World War II Veteran: Phyllis Freymann Koopman

Play in External Player
Transcript (RTF)

Phyllis served in the Waves as an Aviation Machinists Mate 3rd Class. She had wanted to be a sailor as a little kid, because a member of her family was in the Navy. The Navy opened to women in the summer of 1943, and Phyllis joined that fall, as soon as she turned 20. Phyllis had hoped to make it her life’s position. But when the War was over, they tried to put her in an office. She’d done office work before, and that’s not where she wanted to be.
