Program: The Iowa Journal #102
Broadcast Date: Oct. 11, 2007
Seeing a need to help small farmers and processors increase their sales, Bill Evans, a Kalona area businessman, created Kalona Organics. The company focuses on the distribution of produce, eggs and milk produced by Amish and Mennonite farmers. Evans says he expects a 40 percent increase in sales this year... up to $6.5 million.
The program also features a discussion about the growing local food movement. Is it flash in the pan or a long term trend? What can this "Buy Fresh, Buy Local" campaign mean for farmers, consumers and even the state of Iowa's economy? Panelists are Rich Pirog, associate director of the Leopold Center in Ames; and Larry Cleverly of Cleverly Farms in Mingo.
During the Out and About segment, learn about the Iowa town named for a 19th-century Algerian freedom fighter. Abd el-Kader fought hard to resist French colonialism in Algeria. He was not successful, but one of Elkader's settlers admired him so much that he named the town after him.
