World War II Veteran: Lonnie Conger

Duration: 10:18
Transcript (RTF)

Lonnie Conger hitch-hiked 60 miles to Des Moines to enlist in the Navy. He trained as an aviation mechanic and served with the fighter squadron aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid. He tells us about getting hit by a delayed action bomb off the coast of Japan. It happened at breakfast time. Lonnie stayed above on the flight deck to smoke a Lucky Strike. That was indeed lucky, because those at breakfast were killed. They buried 108 men at sea that day; people Lonnie knew.
