World War II Veteran: Jerry Corrigan

Duration: 09:14
Transcript (RTF)

Jerry Corrigan was the third oldest of 11 boys on the family farm north of Harper’s Ferry, Iowa. He tells us about the build-up in February 1945, toward the invasion of Japan. He rode an old Liberty ship, converted into a troop transport around New Guinea and the Marshall Islands, arriving near Manila. Then, they rode open box cars in the pouring rain through the jungle. Most of all, he remembers after the war, seeing the big mountain guns on railroad cars built into the hills in southern Japan. Jerry says an invasion of Japan would have been a slaughter.
