Transcript (RTF)

When Don Cottrell turned 17 he told his dad that he wanted to join the Navy, and to do it that very day. He tells us it was startling the first time he got out to sea and couldn’t see any land. Don served on an L.C.T. that was shipped to Pearl Harbor in three sections. The crew was careful to put the bolts in securely before the 14 men and one officer went aboard. At 17, Don said he always had the feeling that nothing bad was going to happen to him, it was going to happen to the other fellow.
