Francis Toale joined the Navy on September 6, 1942 and served in the 4th division aboard the U.S.S. Idaho until November 1945, after the war was over. They bombarded islands in the South Pacific. The Idaho used up 13 million tons of ammunition and traveled just short of 200,000 miles in the ocean.
