Jim Leach was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1976. He then served 15 terms representing eastern Iowa until 2007.
That 30-year career spanned the chairmanships of the House Banking and Financial Services committee, and the subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs.
Leach was one of the first Republicans to publically endorse Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Leach even spoke to the delegates of the Democratic National Convention.
Following his departure from Congress, Mr. Leach taught at Princeton and Harvard Universities before confirmation to his post as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Now he’s embarking on a 50-state tour to talk civility as part of that post. His visit to Iowa is part of the Better Together: Creating Community through Civility speaker series.
This event was held in Des Moines at Principal Financial's headquarters.
