Duration: 06:55
Program: Need to Know #116
Broadcast Date: Aug. 20, 2010

Cabaret singer Ute Lemper, renowned for her interpretations of songs from Germany's Weimar Republic, takes a journey through the mind of American poet Charles Bukowski in her latest theatrical piece. Her musical performance, featured at Joe's Pub in New York City this week, explores Bukowski's upbringing, obsessions with his internal demons, and views on the decadence of society and the anonymity of American life during the Cold War. Lemper discusses the performance with NEED TO KNOW ON PBS and talks about her long career in reviving the music of prewar Germany.
