HENRY A. WALLACE is the story of a man who changed the world. Wallace was an agricultural scientist whose innovations revolutionized the production of food, not only in this country, but the world over. The increased production those advances brought about changed the way we work. As Roosevelt ’s Secretary of Agriculture, his New Deal programs changed the way Americans relate with their government. And as a politician, the ideas he advocated, like civil rights and national health insurance, changed the way we think.
But Wallace’s story is a tragic one, too. In 1944 he was
within a heartbeat of the Presidency. Six years later, he stood
before the House Un-American Activities Committee defending his
patriotism. The country that had embraced him for his vision,
in the end rejected him for his expectations. Henry
A. Wallace is the story of a man who was caught
between the ideal and the reality that is America.
With a script written by Wallace biographer, John Hyde, the documentary
helps introduce this exceptional man, largely forgotten by history,
to the Americans whose lives he changed.
